Asus & Lamborghini on notebook series

Tags:

Add another to the long and
illustrious list of luxury car-themed laptops in Asus’s new
Lamborghini Notebook Series, the result of a partnership between the computer and automotive companies. The press
release provides an overdose of flowery marketing lingo on quality, performance, speed, power, blah blah blah — but is
incredibly short on details pending its “official debut” tomorow. We do know the Lamborghini Notebook Series
will be available in yellow and black, though, and we all know that in this world it’s what outside that counts.

Apple to launch plasma HDTVs?

Apple to launch plasma HDTVs at Macworld next week?

Mr. Powerpage himself, Jason O’Grady, is laying down a rumor of Apple plasma displays at Macworld,
alongside the annals of his recent breakfast at Wawa. At Wawa he grabbed a breakfast sandwich, but at Macworld he’s
expecting 42 and 50-inch plasma HDTVs with DVI-HDCP and VGA hookups. The real story here is that Apple would be
cramming in whole VIIV computers into these things, including Mac OS 10.4.4 for x86, and charging a mere $2599 or $3299
respectively for the privledge. He’s also saying the included remote will be all 12-buttoned and LCD sporting, but that
no keyboard or mouse will be included, leaving these squarely targeted at working your media. Since we’re hanging in
Vegas we’ve already started the betting pool, which is currently at a buck fifty for and fifty cents against (high
rollers, we know) but we’ll leave it to Stevie J to verify this one on tuesday at Macworld — our fingers are crossed

Hands On with Dell’s XPS Mobile Concept PC

Tags:

It took us a half hour to find Dell’s booth at CES, hidden away in the cheap seats with such neighbors
as Doberman Security and Freedom Laser Therapy. But our long hike through the crowded hallways was worth it, since Dell
was showing off the XPS Mobile Concept PC, which was taken offstage so quickly after Michael Dell’s
speech yesterday that we almost thought it was a cardboard mockup. Well, now that we’ve seen it up close, we can confirm
that it’s definitely not cardboard. It’s a fully functional prototype PC, weighing in at 18 pounds, with a 20-inch
display, sporting 8 speakers, and running Windows XP Media Center Edition. It’s got a Bluetooth keyboard along with a
matching Bluetooth remote, has DVI output for adding additional displays, and supports both dual hard drives and
dual-core processors. The Properties dialog of My Computer identifies it as an Inspiron M2010, though we don’t know if
that model name will stick, and lists its processor as a dual-core 2.1GHz Intel T2600. We still don’t know whether Dell
is ever going to make any of these for public consumption (though there are apparently “a few” like this with
“more to come” according to the Dell rep in the booth). But one thing we do now know: it’s real and it works.

Google Video Store announced

Tags:

It’s arguable that Google was in the content business before, but they’ve officially done it: alongside Google
Pack
(a package installer of many of their popular desktop apps like G Talk, Earth, Desktop, as well as software that Google really likes, like RealPlayer, Acrobat, etc.) they’re going online with CBS to sell commercial-free episodes of CSI, NCIS, Survivor, and a whole host of other CBS library eps — not to mention a whole menagerie of other video content like NBA matches (24 hours after they’ve aired), music videos from Sony BMG, indie films from Greencine.com, news footage, Charlie Rose interviews, and cartoon classics. Though we don’t have pricing right at this moment for downloadable content from the Google Video Store (move over, Apple, Google-train comin’ through), it looks like they might be using
DivX video technolog
y in their distribution, as they’ve also announced what sounds like a loose partnership for “bringing video into the connected home.” One of the more interesting aspects of the Video Store, however, is the fact that they’re also making their non-copy-protected content available for download DRM-free encoded for the iPod
and PSP (though there’s also no word on what it is we’re going to have to deal with in terms of DRM on purchased Google Video content)
